Three Foxes in the Stars and Print on Demand

Here’s the latest thing I’ve been doodling. It is based on this TikTok tune, which I sang all the way to work the other day, substituting foxes for possums. The original intent was to draw them beside a goat chewing on a coat sleeve, but at some point instead they became a constellation.

My personal lyrics:

I am not a person I’m three foxes in the stars

They may say we’re too ambitions but we think we’re going far

We like cats and we like corgis

We like riding in friends cars

And of course we like museums

‘Cause we’re three foxes in the stars

Look, I don’t make the rules up here in this brain, okay? That’s the blessing and curse of ADHD. You learn to just roll with it. If you like this design, I ordered samples in pins, stickers, and magnets that I’ll post on Instagram soon.

In the meantime, though, you can get this design — along with a quote I’ve been itching to use for a long time — on a pair of sneakers.

The Universe is Under No Obligation to Make Sense to You

—Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson

And Neither Am I

—Me, quoting Black Widow to apply it to this context

Rae, you might ask, what’s going on with your print store? Why doesn’t it contain, you know, normal art prints?

The short answer is: because I haven’t found an in-hand print service that I like yet.

The long answer is: because in my search for art prints in various sizes, when I thought I would be making more posters, and my initial poking around of Squarespace, I thought their partnership with Printful was pretty cool. I’m not dissatisfied with the postcards I received from them (although there is a mistake on the digital file that I need to correct before ordering another batch) but I’m more satisfied with their offerings that I can’t source elsewhere. As a sample, I ordered myself a mug with my Tea First print (recently updated!), and a pair of running shorts with my running African Painted Dog that I’m very impressed with. As I continue to experiment with this new kind of designing, Printful serves two purposes for me:

  1. While half of my ADHD hyper focuses on designs that make good stickers, the other half can apply them to any number of products without needing to be restricted by consistancey. It doesn’t cost me anything to explore something new (unless I want to treat myself to a sample, which I desperately want to do with these sneakers) or host it on my shop page, and if it turns out to be the perfect thing for just 1 person, that’s enough for me.

  2. One thing that Printful does offer is framed and canvas prints. While yes, I want to offer the prints that I myself have purchased at conventions… As soon as I think about it, I realize how many of those I still have sitting in a portfolio under my bed, waiting for a frame and to be hung on my wall. Raise your hand if you have a pile, too. Or how many have been damaged at a convention; rolled corners, crinkles, folds. Printful allows me to offer prints that can be shipped home, ready to hang. Nothing extra to carry if you’re traveling, no risk of damage to the art.

So yes, for the time being, I do offer prints. I’ve listed my Affirmations From Aliens design as a canvas print — I really like the simplicity of it on a plain white background, I can see more of these in my future. More things will occasionally pop up when I’m struck with inspiration. And I’ll treat the rest like commissions. If there is something you’d like to receive as a full sized print, let’s talk! We’ll find the perfect combination for you and create a custom listing.

Sometimes I take a step back from this business and think that it’s utterly amazing what I’m able to offer. Sometimes I think I don’t have a niche in this community yet… and that’s okay, because if I can trust my ADHD to do anything, it’s that it’ll bounce around and keep trying things.
